Abstract
A summary of the resource.
It is a perspective of how people think of America as whole. When it comes to the patriotic song "America The Beautiful," the Deaf Community have been signing it the way we were taught and believe that this is our home, a land of the free. But in "BlackDeaf" Community, we questioned it and sign "America" as it it was a land of the slavery. Two images, side by side, are people who has been divided (racial, status, cultural). Privileged one vs. The Oppressed One (the color of the thick curved stripes represent our flag in literal and political ways) . The Beau in the dictionary means Masculine or a female. In that sense, we could not completely say that it is Beautiful...even though it is.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The painting show African masked person. It shows that we as Black people has been trying to cover our real identity when we go out in the mainstreamed society. It has abstract patterns around the mask and the gold hands that sign "Black Lives Matter" but there is a white spot (the hand signing "Deaf"). It portrays a question ...Is Deaf a part of Black Lives Matter?". Even though , there are many people who support Black Lives Matter. Is there any support Black Deaf Lives Matter? That question still remained after not enough Black Deaf representations in media or publication.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
There are three powerful images in this deaf artwork. It comes from Langston Huges poem. In the poem, Langston describes a bird with a broken wing. On contract, The image on the canvas has the sign in white... " white bird" flying out to freedom. Next in his poem, Langston depicts an empty and cold field. In the artwork. there are hands pulling the man down , it shows that the hands are trying to prevent a person from succeed. In Langston's poem, both of these images act as metaphors comparing a life without dreams to a bird that can't fly and an empty/cold field. The artwork shows a man standing with a fist in the air as if it is trying to hold on to a dream. In other word, the sign (bird) will not fly if we don't stand up for ourselves. If we flip this artwork upside down, it will show a black man laying on the ground and the bird crashing on the sidewalk while the hands are holding the person on the ground. That was the wake up time and action for Black Lives Movement.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
It is about Black Men who were victimized by our society especially by oppressor and police. Even though Black Men have their hands up but there is always someone trying to hold them as if they are trying to do something to a person who is not a threat. The white light shaped image on the right reflects the light on the person... who is visibly using excessive force. The gun (ASL sign ) shows on the head ...It shows that someone trying to use the weapon to harm others but that abstract person connected to the gun is hiding behind the shadow (on left part of the image). It shows that in life Black person got killed and the person who did it was never caught or ignored. In my mind of Black person, there is an abstract sign..."Black"...with the thought of being victimized just because of their skin color. The head of black man in the picture shows that he was watching the person who brutalized him.

Abstract

People have asked us...which do we see ourselves as...Black or Deaf? We as a Black Deaf community have been hidden behind the mask and smile....trying to figure out who we are. At the end, most of us are feeling that we are not just this or that, not a half person...As a whole person, we should be called BlackDeaf. Not just Black or Deaf...a whole person. The canvas shows two side of the coins with the sign Black on one side and Deaf on the other side. The colors are blending together to show the wholeness of BlackDeaf individual.
