<text>poems by RAYMOND LUCZAK

INOCULATIONS
in memory of Bruce Hlibok (1960-1995)

Funny how much New York's changed
since you died. Rents have gone way, way up.
Brooklyn is shockingly hip and unaffordable.
Even artists starting out are getting out.
Sleeping on a sofa in the living room for over a thousand dollars a month has become just too much.
So few mom and pop shops are left.
New York's a shopping mall turned inside out.
Name a chain store, and it's there.
They are the only ones who can afford the rent. Greed's become the latest sickness.

I don't speak in tongues anymore.
I speak metaphors now. It's safer.
Just in case I get accidentally infected with
what brought you down in the end,
not the AIDS thing but that other plague
of inconsolable rage you'd felt with everyone,
including me. The deaf community held you back
with their glances bordering on pox
every time you mounted a new play.
Didn't help that you came from a prominent deaf family. Today no one seems to remember you.
Are we all so easily infected to forget?

When you died, I never thought I'd leave New York, the city that you and I loved, but I have.
Even now my hands can hear you calling me back. </text>

1.

A lifetime ago snow fell slowly but surely. It rose so high. Trees everywhere were consumed by white. Eventually night came.
I struggled to stay awake, but the weight of my eyelids pulled me closer to my death in a fit of feverish madness.

2.

I saw him first in the distance. He had the walk of thirst.
The desert sun had bore its rays relentlessly on him
until he couldn't see ahead of him. His mind was split in half.
He tried to stand for as long as he could, but he whirled and crashed
into an oasis of hallucinations.

3.

No matter the weather,
two people kissing for the first time is always an act of prayer.

The ASL gloss portion of the poem first appeared in We A re N ot Your Meta phor:A Disability Poet ry Anth ology (Zoeglossia Fellows, ed.; Squares & Rebels, 2019).

              <text>There is such a Fire
Written by Wren Alman

I walk through the world with my head bowed
Your words come to me like dandelions through the cracked concrete
Desperately blooming
We move together, eyes down
Anxious to look away, afraid to meet one another’s eye

To say ‘excuse me’ as an admonition of need as we move through this world
To say ‘could you repeat that’ like an admittance of guilt
To say ‘the blanket you are weaving in your mind is only half colored with our words, and half with your impression of us.’

The strike of my cane like lightning against the ground in a quiet place
My body the tree, smoldering inside
You another tree, singed from the heat
Our canopies are untouching, shy of one another, of sharing shock and pain and fire

I did not know what it was to love someone like you
Even if I could have heard the gospel, no one was preaching it. To me, to us.
Bodies that are strange and beautiful and not what they want

But yours is a body so lovely in the way it bends.
Like wisteria blooming, wrapped around your Self
You are purpled and climbing ever upwards
And when you touch me, I don’t need to hear the gospel because it is in that
Uneven rise and fall of your chest

The stinging smell of tiger balm and the sensuous coil of your body
seated in a black and metal throne
The touch of your curled hand against my face. The tremble in mine.
The gusty press of words against my ear.

Lightning struck the tree that is my body, your body
The thunder is my cane, your chair, the storm is the silence where there might be sound, the twist and bend of your body
And there is such a fire, shared between us.
