Land Acknowledgement

The land that surrounds us is part of who we are; it reflects our histories. *

“We gratefully acknowledge the Native Peoples on whose ancestral homelands we gather, as well as the diverse and vibrant Native communities who make their home here today.” **

The La Descolonización del Arte: A Celebration of Our Raíces’s Team wants to acknowledge that this virtual art exhibition takes place throughout the unceded territory of the United States that is home to 574 federally recognized tribal nations. Our gratitude and recognition go to the original stewards of this land. We stand in our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships and our understanding of local Indigenous people and their cultures.

From coast to coast, we acknowledge the ancestral and unceded territories of all the Indigenous people that call this land home.

The Joseph F. and Helen C. Dyer Arts Center at NTID is located in Rochester, New York. On the traditional unceded territories of the Haudenosaunee (“People who build a house”): Mohawk (Kanien’kehaka); Oneida (Onayotekaono); Onondaga (Onundagaono); Cayuga (Guyohkohnyoh); Seneca (Onondowahgah); and Tuscarora (Skaruhreh).

Leticia Arellano (Curator) works in Washington, District of Columbia; located on the traditional unceded territories of the Nacotchtank (Anacostan) and Piscataway.

Francisco Arias (Editor) works in Long Beach, California; located on the traditional unceded territories of the Tongva (Gabrieleno), and Kizh (Gabrieleno).

Roberto Sandoval (Curator) works in Los Angeles, California; located on the traditional unceded territories of the Chumash, Tongva, and Kizh.

Join us in a moment of reflection to acknowledge the painful history of genocide and forced removal from the ancestral territories. We honor and respect the many diverse Indigenous people still connected to the lands on which we gather.
