Black C.O.D.A.
Abstract
“I grew up in the Pacific Northwest as the only hearing member of a deaf family. I also hold an MFA in writing from Johns Hopkins University. Having worked as a sign language interpreter for over twelve years, I bring to bear on every piece a poet’s meditative self-discipline and research, as well as the intuitive grasp of gesture and expression I’ve learned from the Deaf community. I also draw from my studies at the Watts Atelier, under Jeffrey Watts, Erik and Meadow Gist, and Stan Prokopenko, as well as a continued store of influences, ranging from classical masters such as Caravaggio, Friant, Klimt, Ingres, Titian, and Vermeer, to modern masters like Whistler, Rockwell, and Sargent, and even to contemporary figures and landscape artists like Diarmuid Kelley and Robert Marchessault.” – Frank Gallimore
